Padres catcher Ethan Salas got on the board yesterday, smashing a triple off the right-field wall for his first MLB hit. The 20-year-old is the youngest player to triple for his first hit since teammate Manny Machado in 2012 (h/t Adrian Garro of MLB.com).

1. Alonso returns to Citi Field

Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso will face his old team for the first time on Monday. He’ll return to Queens after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Mets. Alonso won Rookie of the Year with the club in 2019. He slugged 264 home runs with New York and was a fan favorite during his tenure. “It better be electric,” Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said (h/t Dan Martin of the New York Post). “I hope people go crazy for him. He deserves it.” Alonso signed a five-year, $155MM deal with Baltimore. He’s had a typical season, launching 35 home runs and driving in 100.

2. Tolle fires immaculate inning

Rainy weather and a delayed start didn’t slow down Payton Tolle on Sunday against the Royals. The Red Sox lefty blazed out of the gates, striking out Nick Loftin, Bobby Witt Jr., and Jac Caglianone on nine pitches. The immaculate inning came on eight fastballs and a sinker. The sinker was 97 mph, so it was all heat from Tolle. The lefty struck out seven over six shutout frames. It was Tolle’s second straight quality start after he failed to complete six innings in his final three outings of August.

3. Vlad goes deep in Toronto

It took almost the entire year, but Blue Jays fans finally got to see a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. home run at Rogers Centre. The first baseman tagged Orioles lefty Trevor Rogers for a solo shot in the fifth inning. It was the second of three consecutive homers by Toronto. George Springer homered ahead of Guerrero, and Kazuma Okamoto followed him with a blast. Guerrero’s power has taken a huge step back this season. He has just nine home runs in 135 games. Guerrero’s .365 SLG is 68 points worse than his previous career low, which came as a rookie in 2019. Guerrero has the ninth-lowest ISO among qualified hitters at .100.
