The Mets are closing in on hiring Derek Falvey to a front office position, reports Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Falvey was most recently the president of baseball operations with the Twins. He worked with current Mets POBO David Stearns in Cleveland.

It’s unclear what Falvey’s exact gig will be. Rosenthal and Sammon note he’ll have a “significant role” in team decisions. Falvey served as co-director of baseball operations alongside Stearns with the Guardians starting in 2011. He took over as chief baseball officer in Minnesota following the 2016 season.

While he’s stood by Stearns this year, Mets owner Steve Cohen told reporters recently that he’d be looking to add to the front office this offseason. Cohen described the approach as a collaborative effort.

“We’re going to try to add certain voices into the front office that I think will be helpful, and I know (president of baseball operations) David (Stearns) supports that, and I’m looking forward to when we make those decisions, announcing it,” Cohen said, as relayed by Steve Berman of The Athletic.

Falvey unexpectedly departed the Twins organization in January. The sides described the split as a mutual parting of ways. Further reporting detailed a difference in opinion between Falvey and executive chair Tom Pohlad. The team seemed headed toward a rebuild after a mass selloff at the 2025 trade deadline, but Pohlad was outspoken about competing in 2026 heading into the campaign.

The out-of-nowhere departure for Falvey was the latest move in a tumultuous stretch for the organizational structure. After the 2024 season, general manager Thad Levine stepped down. Former chairman Joe Pohlad began exploring a sale of the franchise. President and CEO Dave St. Peter was next to step down. Those moves led to Falvey taking over the business side of the operation, in addition to his baseball duties. The Twins sale ultimately never came to fruition. Tom Pohlad took over as the executive chair, which soon led to Falvey leaving just a year after his promotion to the dual president role. GM Jeremy Zoll was promoted to the top position.
