In spring 2025, the outdoor recreation community successfully pushed lawmakers to remove provisions from the federal budget bill that could have led to widespread public land sales. Despite this victory, millions of acres remain at risk through other legal pathways. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has identified over six million acres across 17 Western states for potential sale, as recorded in decades-old Resource Management Plans (RMPs). Many of these plans haven’t been updated to reflect modern values or changing community needs, and in some cases, large swaths of land were broadly categorized for disposal without detailed review.
To bring visibility and context to this issue, onX Maps and the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) developed a first-of-its-kind interactive map. This tool allows users to locate and zoom in to see where these potentially disposable parcels exist in relation to towns, roads, and other public lands—information that was previously buried in lengthy government documents. The map is intended to increase transparency and public awareness around decisions that could significantly impact access to public lands.
Head over to this page at onXmaps.com to see the map and lean more about the advocacy measures they are taking. Note that the map includes parcels sourced from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), though some plans with eligible parcels are currently missing and may be added if additional information becomes available. Alaska also contains thousands of acres flagged for potential sale, but those parcels were excluded due to significant data gaps and the state’s unique legal complexities around land sales and transfers.
