In order to give himself a chance to have success again as a Yankee, Anthony Volpe had to take a step back — both literally and figuratively. 

When the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A last month, after spending three-plus years as their starting shortstop and unsure of whether he might ever find a way back, Volpe had 72 hours to report to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. 

Instead of going straight there and playing right away, though, he took the time to himself and dove into old video and notes. Volpe wanted to remind himself of what his swing looked like when he was going right, why he was doing certain things and why he stopped doing them. 

Most importantly, he wanted to be brutally honest with himself.
