LeBron James turned down a far more lucrative offer to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, making it clear that money was not the driving force behind his free agency decision.

After spending eight seasons with the Lakers, James opted for a new opportunity instead of remaining in Los Angeles.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Clippers tried to keep him in the city by offering a one-year contract worth more than $20 million, but the veteran star declined.

James reportedly considered several destinations, including the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, before ultimately choosing Philadelphia.

The move begins a new chapter as James leaves the West Coast to chase one more championship with the 76ers.

McMenamin said the decision had little to do with finances.

“But if it was just about the money, he could have stayed home and played for the Clippers,” McMenamin wrote.

“Ultimately, his decision – the last decision of this nature in his career – was all about finding that feeling of fully immersing himself in a basketball environment of his choosing.”
