The Golden State Warriors were never given a specific directive from LeBron James or his agent Rich Paul to make a particular roster move in order to secure his commitment, despite directly asking, according to team sources. Still, league sources indicated there were subtle suggestions that a major upgrade could have significantly improved Golden State's chances.

That dynamic was believed to be especially true regarding Anthony Davis, who won a championship alongside James with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. The Warriors, however, never seriously engaged the Washington Wizards on a Davis trade, showing no willingness to part with Jimmy Butler or the substantial draft capital such a deal would require, particularly without a firm commitment from James in return.

Several league insiders drew comparisons to the 2019 trade in which the Oklahoma City Thunder extracted Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, five first-round picks and two pick swaps from the Los Angeles Clippers for Paul George, knowing the Clippers were simultaneously facilitating an agreement with free agent Kawhi Leonard. Wizards president Michael Winger, who served as the Clippers' general manager during that 2019 deal, understood the leverage he would hold had the Warriors approached Washington about Davis. The Wizards never intended to move Davis, and the Warriors ultimately never made the call.

Steve Kerr explained the organization's cautious approach to such a high-stakes swing.

"You have to understand your place in the league and where everybody else is and what the future looks like," said Kerr. "Mike is really smart and prudent. He understands the landscape. Joe's in agreement on that. We're all pretty much really on the same page in terms of just being wise. [Sometimes] not making a move can be the best thing to do for your future. And you keep stacking up good moves and eventually you pounce when you're ready."
