Russell Westbrook has agreed to a deal with the Sacramento Kings, ESPN insider Shams Charania reported on Wednesday. The 35-year-old veteran enters his 18th NBA season after previously declining a $3.4 million player option.
The former MVP and nine-time All-Star is expected to provide depth and veteran leadership in Sacramento’s second unit.
The guard has existing ties within the organization, including past playing experience with Domantas Sabonis and Dennis Schroder. He also shares Los Angeles connections with DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine, two of the team’s key contributors.
Professional relationships with new front-office members may have influenced the move. Westbrook reportedly holds respect for GM Scott Perry and assistant GM BJ Armstrong from their time on the agency side, while new head coach Doug Christie admires his competitiveness and leadership.
