Tennessee women’s basketball player Ruby Whitehorn was arrested in Knox County on Friday on felony charges of aggravated burglary and domestic assault, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
The charges stem from what police describe as a domestic dispute. Court records say Whitehorn encountered the alleged victim outside the victim’s home after hearing glass break.
The victim’s dog reportedly got loose, and during the commotion, she ran inside with what she thought was her own phone but later realized belonged to Whitehorn.
The victim claims Whitehorn kicked in the front door, chased her upstairs, forced open her locked bedroom door, broke a mirror, retrieved her phone, and left. She told police she feared Whitehorn would harm her.
Whitehorn contends the victim attacked her first in the parking lot and that she was only defending herself and trying to recover her phone. Officers determined Whitehorn was the aggressor.
The university acknowledged the arrest, saying it is gathering more information. Whitehorn, a senior guard, averaged 11.6 points per game last season, her second year with Tennessee after transferring from Clemson.
