Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young is not expected to enter contract extension discussions with the franchise this offseason, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer on The Stein Line.
Fischer reported that despite being eligible to sign a new deal since July 6, league sources say there are no plans for Young and Atlanta to engage in negotiations. The decision aligns with an expectation from Young’s camp to finish the final guaranteed year of his current contract before addressing his $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season.
The 26-year-old guard is coming off a 2024-25 campaign in which he averaged 24.2 points and a career-high 11.6 assists per game. Since being drafted in 2018, he has been the centerpiece of the Hawks’ offense, posting career averages of 25.3 points and 9.8 assists.
ESPN’s Marc J. Spears previously reported on NBA Today that Young is “disappointed” about the lack of an offer, noting his demeanor during the NBA Finals and a cryptic social media post as indicators of his frustration. Spears emphasized that Atlanta’s new front office is still evaluating long-term decisions.
While there was once interest from Young’s camp in pairing him with San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama—an idea tied to his previous representation under Rich Paul—Fischer clarified there is no suggestion the three-time All-Star is pushing for a trade.
The Hawks have reshaped their roster this summer, including the acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis as a new pick-and-pop option. Young has never previously played alongside a scoring forward of Porzingis’ caliber. Additionally, his strong relationship with head coach Quin Snyder, who has publicly praised Young’s leadership and defensive engagement, remains a source of optimism heading into the new season.
Atlanta has struggled to advance in the postseason since reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, failing to move past the first round in each of the last three seasons. With no extension in place, Young’s future could be determined by the team’s performance and organizational commitment over the next two years.
Young’s current five-year, $215 million deal, signed in August 2021, runs through 2025-26, with the player option potentially making him a free agent in the summer of 2026.
