Finnish basketball prospect Miikka Muurinen has received a fine after being caught speeding in Helsinki while not holding a valid driving licence.

According to the Finnish Prosecution Authority, Muurinen was driving along Makelankatu on May 11 when police recorded him traveling at 76 km/h in an area where the speed limit was 40 km/h.

The 19-year-old was handed 28 day-fines for endangering traffic safety and driving without a valid licence.

With each fine valued at €29, the total came to €812. An additional €60 victim surcharge increased the overall amount to €872.

Muurinen had one passenger with him when police stopped the vehicle.

The highly regarded prospect presented officers with a U.S. driver’s licence, but the document had expired in September 2025.

Prosecutors subsequently determined that Muurinen was not legally permitted to drive in Finland.

He did not receive a driving ban because he did not possess a valid Finnish licence in the first place.

Away from the incident, Muurinen is preparing for the next stage of his basketball career.

The 7-footer has committed to Arkansas, helping head coach John Calipari assemble the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class.

Muurinen previously attended multiple high schools in the United States before joining Partizan Belgrade.

He appeared in 14 games for the Serbian club this season, including six EuroLeague contests.
