Khalifa Diop appears to be moving closer to an NBA opportunity after leaving Baskonia to travel to the United States.

The Senegalese center is nearing a potential agreement with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the organization that selected him with the 39th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

According to Marca, Diop traveled to Cleveland with Baskonia’s permission and will undergo medical examinations before the Cavaliers make a final decision on whether to add him to their roster for the 2026-27 season.

His departure has already affected Baskonia’s preseason preparations.

The Spanish club reportedly canceled a scheduled friendly against Gipuzkoa because it currently does not have enough available players, with Diop’s absence contributing to the situation.

Diop remains under contract with Baskonia, meaning Cleveland would need to provide financial compensation to the Vitoria-based club if the move is completed.
