Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayStefan Bondy of the New York Post points out that it’s surprising there hasn’t been more discussion this summer about a potential contract extension for Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns.
The big man has until October 20 to extend his current deal, which runs through the 2026/27 season and includes a $61 million player option for the following year.
Bondy notes that he has been unable to gather any concrete information regarding extension talks. Towns’ agent didn’t respond to inquiries on the matter, and team president Leon Rose rarely communicates with the media, leaving little clarity on the situation.
According to Bondy, it seems likely that the player will finish out the remainder of his contract, possibly exercising his player option, before negotiating a new deal.
While Towns could potentially secure a two-year, $150 million extension, Bondy suggests that even for a perennial All-Star, $75 million per year may not represent fair value as teams work to remain under the second luxury-tax apron.
Bondy also raises several key questions the Knicks would need to consider before committing to such a substantial extension. Can Towns maintain better health than he did during his tenure in Minnesota?
Will he and Jalen Brunson develop improved chemistry within the offense? Can he enhance his pick-and-roll defense? And does he fit more effectively as a center or as a power forward in New York’s system?
