Signing players based on World Cup performances alone is often a foolish venture, but statement showings on the world stage can help to enhance the standing of a target who is already under consideration, as might be the case at Arsenal this summer.

By all accounts, the Gunners - alongside Paris Saint-Germain - are leading the race for Lille teenager, Ayyoub Bouaddi, with the 18-year-old emerging as the breakout star of the tournament so far.

Having only recently declared his allegiance to Morocco, Bouaddi is now front and centre for the North African side, having starred against both Brazil and Scotland to date.

An elegant and eye-catching midfield sensation, it's easy to see why the France-born talent is attracting such intense interest, as is the case for others who are also shining for their country.

Arsenal offered chance to sign World Cup star

It's been a busy start to the window as far as Arsenal are concerned, with the Gunners not resting on their laurels despite enjoying such a stellar season under Mikel Arteta's watch.

The suggestion is that the Emirates could be the destination for Leicester City teenager, Jeremy Monga, with a deal expected to be completed at some stage this summer.

The word is too that a bid will arrive imminently for Greek winger, Christos Tzolis, the Club Brugge man available for a fee of around £34m following a stunning campaign in Belgium.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, one potential opening could have emerged with regard to Germany's Felix Nmecha, with TEAMtalk reporting that Arsenal are among the clubs to have been approached by intermediaries, amid the possibility of a move.

Those talks have centred around the fact that the Borussia Dortmund man could be keen on a return to England this summer, having come through the academy ranks at Manchester City.

The likes of Liverpool and Man Utd have also received the green light too, as have Barcelona and Real Madrid, with the 25-year-old seemingly set to cost around £52m.

Why Nmecha could be an upgrade on Bouaddi

Bouaddi was breathtaking against Brazil and dominant again against Scotland, although Nmecha has enjoyed his own fine start at the World Cup with Germany.

The towering midfielder opened the scoring as the 2014 winners romped to a 7-1 win over Curacao, curling home in exquisite style following a neat lay-off from Liverpool's Florian Wirtz.

That set the tone for an all-round dominant display from Nmecha in that thumping victory, showcasing why manager Julian Nagelsmann believes he can become the "best player in the world" in his position, as relayed by journalist Patrick Berger.

Tipped previously to be a possible replacement for Rodri at Man City by analyst and Como scout, Ben Mattinson, there is a real completeness to Nmecha's game, as he has shown consistently back in Germany.

Tasked with filling Jude Bellingham's shoes at Dortmund, Nmecha has risen to the challenge in recent years, enjoying a particularly fine 2025/26 campaign.

In all, the dynamic number eight scored and assisted five Bundesliga goals last season, creating three 'big chances' and boasting an impressive 87% pass accuracy rate.

For comparison, back in Ligue 1 with Lille, Bouaddi - while operating slightly deeper - wasn't quite as impactful, registering just one assist and recording just an 85% pass accuracy rate, albeit while also creating three 'big chances'.

As noted by ScoutLab, it is also Nmecha who appears the more probing, forward-thinking option, having averaged 1.73 progressive passes per 90, ahead of Bouaddi's 1.39 average.

That doesn't just apply in terms of ball-carrying either, with the German also significantly ahead with regard to progressive passes (3.34 vs 1.97).

There may be concern over whether Nmecha will be able to transition to life in the Premier League, although encouragingly, two of the top ten most similar players to him in Europe's top seven leagues last season, as per ScoutLab, were Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, two players who have been on Arsenal's radar this year.

That suggests he shouldn't have any trouble settling in at the Emirates, with the chance there for him to live up to the billing that he has been given by Nagelsmann.

Bouaddi, still only 18, may still need time to truly blossom and develop, although Nmecha already looks like the real deal.
