Aston Villa are still looking to flex their Champions League status for the first time this summer, as they look to hand Unai Emery a squad capable of competing on all fronts.
The Villans have been forced to bide their time, but recent rumours have claimed that they've now got their sights on midfield star Arthur Atta, who has already received an offer from Newcastle United.
|
Aston Villa are a bit short in midfield following the injury to Amadou Onana and have got no choice but to enter the market. That's where Atta comes in. Newcastle were leading the race for the Atalanta man, but Villa's in-person checks could quickly commence a hijack. |
|
The Villans have still got SCR rules to consider and that's what makes Atta such an ideal target. The midfielder is reportedly worth just €25m (£21m), but it's likely that Udinese demand more than that. |
|
Atta is a fantastic all-rounder in the middle of the park, but his best work comes in attack. The Udinese man was involved in eight Serie A goals last season. |
|
Newcastle would have to push on and welcome targets such as Johan Manzambi if they missed out on Atta, but Aston Villa still have a lot of work to do to make that happen. |
In an expensive midfield market, Atta represents a rare bargain. Aston Villa should turn their interest into an offer as soon as possible if they want to hijack Newcastle's bid.
Aston Villa chiefs complete checks on Atta
As reported by Tuttomercatoweb, Aston Villa chiefs have travelled to join the race for Atta this summer, completing in-person checks on the Frenchman.
It's their first step towards a hijack on Newcastle, who were in pole position to land the Udinese man last summer and even reportedly submitted an offer.
In many ways, it would sum up the Magpies' recent recruitment if they missed out on another target to a Premier League rival.
Atta can replace injured Onana at Aston Villa
It's looking like the worst possible news for Amadou Onana. Not only will the Belgian miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering a suspected ACL injury against America this week, but he'll also miss at least the first half of next season at Aston Villa.
The injury could reportedly change Villa's transfer stance and force their hand in the midfield market, where Atta could come in as an ideal option.
The Frenchman is now a top target in the Midlands and that should come as no surprise. His ball retention skills and eye for a goal from midfield are both traits that will need replacing without the presence of Onana.
