The Blues reached half-time level following a tight opening period in which neither team created enough clear chances.

Morgan Rogers went closest for Chelsea when his powerful effort was deflected wide, while Danny Welbeck struggled to find space against Brentford’s organised defence.

Cole Palmer showed occasional flashes of quality, but the visitors lacked a cutting edge without the injured Joao Pedro.

Brentford were comfortable allowing Chelsea to have spells on the ball before attacking quickly whenever possession changed hands.

The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute through a well worked corner. Mikkel Damsgaard delivered towards the back post, where Moritz Schuster headed the ball across goal for Jaidon Anthony to finish from close range.

Chelsea briefly responded and began to apply more pressure.

Palmer attempted to find space inside a crowded penalty area, while Pedro Neto saw a promising opening disappear after taking too long to shoot.

However, the Blues never seriously threatened Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal.

Their hopes of rescuing something disappeared in the 83rd minute. Jordan Henderson surrendered possession and Brentford immediately broke forward.

Kevin Schade’s effort was saved by Emi Martinez, but Igor Thiago reacted quickest to score from the rebound.

Fábio Carvalho then completed the 3-0 victory in the fourth minute of added time, sealing Brentford’s first home win over Chelsea since 1938.

The result leaves Alonso’s side seventh in the Premier League with seven points from five games. Chelsea have now conceded 12 league goals and are still waiting for their first clean sheet under the Spaniard.

Attention after the game quickly turned towards Alonso’s use of his substitutes, particularly his decision to leave Estêvão on the bench until the 87th minute.

The Brazilian replaced Neto only after Brentford had scored their second goal, leaving him with little more than stoppage time to influence the contest.

Chelsea influencer Alex Goldberg admitted he remains firmly behind Alonso but could not understand why the manager waited so long.

Alonso had already made two changes in the 72nd minute, introducing Geovany Quenda and Josh Acheampong for Welbeck and Wesley Fofana.

Chelsea needed greater invention before that point, and Neto had struggled to make an impact, while Brentford were growing in confidence after taking the lead.

Estêvão is one of Chelsea’s most naturally gifted attackers and possesses the skill to unsettle defenders in one-v-ones. Bringing him on with only a few minutes remaining gave him almost no opportunity to change the game.

The defeat does not mean Chelsea should panic this early in Alonso’s reign, as injuries have disrupted his options and several new players are still finding their feet.

However, Goldberg’s criticism will be shared by plenty of supporters.

Estêvão cannot be expected to solve every problem, but Chelsea must give him enough time to make a difference, especially considering Stamford Bridge chiefs have very high hopes for him behind-the-scenes.
