Relative unknown Tyrrel Herndon will attempt to become the fourth man to hand Deontay Wilder a defeat on the 27th of this month. Herndon, a huge underdog going into his fight with the former WBC heavyweight champion, would almost certainly end Wilder’s career if he did manage to beat him. Wilder, who needs to show us, and himself, that he still carries the lethal punching power he displayed so many times in racking up his 42 KO wins, aims to flatten Herndon and then go on to have bigger fights.
Whether Wilder still has dynamite in his fists we don’t know, but Herndon is not going to go out there and slug it out with Wilder in a an effort at finding out how much damage “The Bronze Bomber” is still capable of inflicting on a rival fighter. No, Herndon, 24-5(15) says he is going to box against Wilder, and he has revealed that he has been watching the tape of a fight that saw Wilder get comprehensively outboxed.
Joseph Parker won practically every round when he decisioned Wilder back in December of 2023, and Herndon thinks he can do a similar job on 39 year old Wilder, 43-4-1(42).
“That’s one of the top five fights that I’m dissecting,” Herndon said to Tha Boxing Voice in referring to Parker W12 Wilder. “He put on a beautiful boxing clinic. Just from his distance to the punches he chose, that’s one that I’m watching. I feel like I can emulate something like that. I’m taking the great things that he did and putting them in my bag.”
It would be a bad night for Wilder and for Wilder fans if Herndon did outbox the former champ and won a decision, thus likely putting a firm end to any of the still ongoing talk of Wilder perhaps fighting Anthony Joshua (this a fight that plenty of people still want to see happen) later on this year. But what a great night it would be for Herndon if he managed to pull it off.
Again, how much power has Wilder got today, and can he blast Herndon out? Anything less, and plenty of critics will undoubtedly say Wilder is done at anything approaching elite level. A decision win for Wilder will not be enough. It has to be a KO win, one that allows Wilder to state that he is back.
Herndon has other ideas.
Deontay Wilder Blames Injury Woes for Recent Losses
Deontay Wilder says the problems that he’s been dealing with lately inside the ring have been a result of injuries that affected his right arm. He states that he’s now healthy and ready to continue with his goal of becoming the undisputed champion.
Wilder, 39, is returning to the ring against veteran Tyrrell Anthony Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs) on June 27th at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas. The former WBC champion Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) needs to make up for lost time because the last six years have been one dreary nightmare for the 2008 Olympic bronze bomber, with him losing to Tyson Fury x 2, Joseph Parker, and Zhilei Zhang.
Wilder can’t afford another loss. It’s bad enough that he’s fighting the no-name journeyman Herndon in Wichita rather than being on the A-list to compete on the lucrative Riyadh Season shows. His last two defeats against Parker and Zhang may have permanently ruined Deontay’s chances of being invited back.
“We wanted to make sure I was physically healthy. I injured my shoulder, and then it healed. Then I fell on that same shoulder. So, I had to start that process again,” said Deontay Wilder to DAZN Boxing about why he’s been struggling for the last five years.
“Everything I threw my right hand, it would be nothing but pain. I’m fully healed. I don’t have no more pain and all my burdens have been cut loose from me. I still got to unify the division. That’s one of the main things that I came in for and a goal that I set forth.
“I never had the opportunity to get that accomplished due to other circumstances of different obligations of other people. I never had that opportunity, but I’m still here. I’m still young [39], and healthy. It feels so good to be so successful for what I’ve done,” said Wilder.
