Edgar Berlanga surprisingly stayed quiet about his opponent, Hamzah Sheeraz, choosing to repeatedly lash out at promoter Oscar De La Hoya using expletives during today’s open workout for his fight against Hamzah Sheeraz this Saturday, July 12th.

Berlanga Blasts De La Hoya

Throughout the interview inside the ring today, Berlanga said, “F*** De La Hoya.” Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) is still salty about De La Hoya criticizing him for trying to pass himself off as a Puerto Rican despite being born in the U.S, and calling him a “sub-par” opponent for Canelo Alvarez when they fought last September.

Oscar turned out to be right about Edgar being “sub-par,” as he looked terrible, not even trying to win in losing a lopsided 12-round decision against the Mexican star Canelo.

Surprisingly, Turki Alalshikh still chose to use Berlanga as a headliner against Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs), even though he hadn’t redeemed himself in any way since the loss to Alvarez. Berlanga’s only fight since that loss was against the Fury-esque fighter, Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz, last March.

Berlanga’s Pre-Fight Confidence

“I want to perform and put on a good show. I want to shine with superstar status, sharp and look amazing, ” said Edgar Berlanga during today’s open workout to prepare for Saturday’s fight against Hamzah Sheeraz.

It’s questionable whether Berlanga will “put on a good show” on Saturday. If Sheeraz hits him hard in the first round, he goes into his shell like he did against Canelo, and just fights to survive.

Edgar is not the type of fighter who is willing to go out on his shield the way warriors do. It wasn’t just the Canelo fight that Berlanga fought scared. He did the same thing against Roamer Alexis Angulo when he got hit hard early by him.

July 12th: Berlanga’s Show

“I know what I’m up against. I haven’t taken this guy lightly. I know what I got to do. 1000%. I’m aiming for that,” said Berlanga to the media when asked if he wants to fight the winner of Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight. “On July 12th, I’ve got to shine first.

There’s virtually no chance that Turki Alalshikh is going to use Berlanga to fight the winner of the September 13th fight between Canelo and Crawford. He would be raked over the coals by the fans if he used Berlanga as the opponent.

“I’m talking my s***, but I got to back it up. It’s forcing me to perform.”
