Former super welterweight titleholder Tony Harrison will return to action on July 26, facing Edward Diaz in a 10-round middleweight fight on the Claressa Shields vs Lani Daniels undercard.

Harrison, at 34, hasn’t fought since his March 2023 loss to Tim Tszyu, a ninth round TKO on the road in Australia. The Detroit native was competitive in that fight before being stopped. His last win came in April 2022 against Sergio Garcia.

Harrison won the WBC 154 lb title in an upset victory over Jermell Charlo in December 2022, then lost it back to Charlo by stoppage a year later.

Harrison says he plans to stay active in this comeback run.

“We are excited to get back in there and get to work,” said Harrison. “It’s been a minute, but we are going to roll out like George Foreman did for his comeback.

“I have a short window left, so we are going to be active, keep winning, and eventually get back to the mountain top. Regaining a world title is my No. 1 goal, and I am feeling very strong at 160. It all starts once again in my hometown. Let’s eat.”

The 34-year-old Diaz (15-6, 12 KO) is the expected level of opponent for this sort of return to action. The Dominican fighter has been stopped in five of his six losses, and has just two victories over opponents who came in with winning records, defeating Mark DeLuca in 2022 and Gian Carrido in 2023.
