Evan Fournier has already built an accomplished career, but the veteran guard is not ready to walk away from the French national team just yet, via Aris Barkas of Eurohoops.

The 33-year-old has won the EuroLeague with Olympiacos, spent 12 seasons in the NBA and collected Olympic silver medals in both Tokyo and Paris.

Victor Wembanyama, however, has given Fournier another reason to continue representing France.

“He’s a global megastar, but on a daily basis, he is also a great guy, focused on others, who really wants to perform,” Fournier told L’Equipe about France’s new captain.

“The fact that he’s there, I’m not going to lie, has been a motivation for me to continue.”

Wembanyama’s commitment has particularly impressed Fournier as France moves toward qualification for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.

“Seeing a kid who wants to achieve things and puts in the effort is inspiring… I don’t want to come just for the sake of coming,” Fournier said.

After spending years as one of France’s central figures, Fournier understands that younger players are now taking on greater responsibility.

He sees himself transitioning into a veteran role that can help the new generation.

“I can be the player who makes sure everything is in order.”
