Former UFC featherweight title challenger Mark Hominick is educating the next Mixed Martial Arts generation using Shawn Tompkins’ teachings.

UFC legend Mark Hominick’s ascension in Mixed Martial Arts wouldn’t’ve been possible without the influence of coach Shawn Tompkins.

After a four-fight professional fighting career, Tompkins turned his full-time attention towards teaching Hominick and several other pupils such as Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva. Tompkins is considered a Canadian MMA pioneer and one of the important influences in coaching.

Tompkins died of a heart attack at just 37 years old in August 2011. He was posthumously awarded the World MMA Awards Lifetime Achievement Award just months later.

Fast forward to 2026, and Hominick continues to coach several prominent up-and-comers using Tompkins’ philosophies. After the fifteenth anniversary of Tompkins’ passing, his legacy remains irreplicable.

In the latest episode of BetOnline’s The Fight Guys podcast, Hominick touted Tompkins’ lasting impact on the evolution of MMA.

“His charisma. Like to me, I started when I was about 16, and I had already been training Martial Arts and competing…his charisma and his bleached, blonde hair, California sun-looking guy and you were drawn to him,” Hominick said of Tompkins.

“When you were in a room with him, you felt special. Especially as a kid, there’s someone you could look up to. I remember after my first weekend training with him I went home, bleached my hair blonde, came in with the Peroxide look like Shawn [LAUGHS]. He had that effect on people, no matter where it was…he opened up doors for us because promoters, fans, and everybody else was just drawn to him with his charisma that he had…

“There were a lot of good and bad ways that we’ve been remembered, but we always had fun doing it,” Hominick continued. “Left our stamp wherever we went…you met him once, and you knew him for the rest of your life.”
