Trey Kaufman-Renn has opened the door to an unusual return to college basketball despite already being selected in the 2026 NBA Draft.

A judge granted Kaufman-Renn a temporary restraining order that gives him a sixth season of NCAA eligibility.

The forward is seeking to use that additional year after spending the previous five seasons at Purdue.

His case centers on the 2021-22 campaign, when Kaufman-Renn redshirted and did not play for the Boilermakers.

He went on to appear in 147 games across the following four seasons and is arguing that the NCAA’s five-year eligibility policy leaves him with another season of college basketball.

Kaufman-Renn had already taken the first steps toward beginning his professional career.

The Minnesota Timberwolves selected the 6-foot-9 forward with the 59th overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft.

He subsequently appeared in five Summer League games for Minnesota but did not sign an official NBA contract, leaving a path available for his potential return to the college level.

The Timberwolves are reportedly supportive of Kaufman-Renn’s attempt to play another NCAA season.

Even if he returns to college, Minnesota would continue to hold his NBA draft rights going forward.
