Thomas Heurtel has taken legal action against FC Barcelona, filing a claim for €1.6 million in damages after a proposed move to the club collapsed unexpectedly, according to reports from RAC1 and Mundo Deportivo.
Heurtel argues that the failed transfer left him in a precarious situation both financially and professionally. By his account, he had already turned down another lucrative offer from ASVEL in anticipation of completing the Barcelona deal.
When that agreement ultimately fell apart, he found himself without a team and without the security of the contract he believed was coming.
The 36-year-old maintains that Barcelona’s handling of the negotiations misled him, leaving him with no viable alternatives by the time the deal broke down.
He claims the lost opportunity cost him both money and career stability, hence the damages being sought.
Barcelona, however, disputes Heurtel’s version of events. The club insists that there was no signed contract or official document binding them to the player, and therefore no legal grounds for compensation.
With the two sides standing firm, the matter will now move into the courts. A hearing is expected in the near future, where both Heurtel’s claims and Barcelona’s defense will be formally presented.
The outcome could set an important precedent for how failed transfer negotiations are handled within European basketball.
