Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayAtlas pointed to Robinson’s unbeaten streak, knockout record, and activity level at welterweight
Teddy Atlas says Sugar Ray Robinson still ranks above Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Terence Crawford as the greatest welterweight in boxing history. Atlas pointed to Robinson’s unbeaten streak, knockout totals, and relentless activity during his prime years.
“[He] may be the greatest fighter of all time, Sugar Ray Robinson. 173 wins, 19 losses, most of ‘em when he was old, six draws, 108 knockouts. That is a lot of knockouts. That is a lot of fights,” said Atlas on his channel.
“He had a 91-fight unbeaten streak. That is pretty good. Those losses, like I said, most of ‘em came when he was old, way beyond his prime. Welter and middleweight champ, he would have won the light-heavyweight title too.”
Atlas also brought up Robinson’s 1952 fight against Joey Maxim at Yankee Stadium, a bout remembered as much for the brutal heat as the action inside the ring.
“He was fighting [Joey Maxim] at Yankee Stadium; it was about 105 degrees in the ring on a summer night outdoors in June. The referee got carried out earlier from heat prostration; he got carried out of the ring. It was that hot, it was that brutal.
“I forget what round it was, it was a very late round [13], and Robinson collapsed. He was ahead in the fight, he was going to win the light-heavyweight title, and he collapsed from heat prostration, just like the referee had done four or five rounds earlier.”
Modern fans usually build the welterweight debate around Mayweather, Crawford, Manny Pacquiao, and other recent champions because there is more footage available and the eras feel easier to compare. Atlas went the other direction by focusing on Robinson’s workload and longevity.
Robinson held the world welterweight title from 1946 to 1951 and finished his career with more than 170 wins. Numbers like that barely seem real compared to the schedules modern fighters keep today.
