Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe Los Angeles Dodgers are the first team to punch their ticket to the World Series this postseason after sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series.
Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani has been quiet for most of the postseason and was 6-for-38 entering Game 4 on Friday. However, Ohtani erupted in the Dodgers' 5-1 win, nearly single-handedly propelling Los Angeles past Milwaukee by delivering both on the mound and at the plate.
He struck out 10 through six innings, while allowing two hits and walking three, and went 3-for-3 with three home runs, three RBI and a walk, en route to a second straight NL pennant. Ohtani was named NLCS MVP for his performance.
Facing either the Toronto Blue Jays or the Seattle Mariners in the World Series, keeping Ohtani rolling will be key to the Dodgers clinching their second straight title. Luckily for L.A., he has strong numbers against both teams.
Shohei Ohtani is key to Dodgers winning back-to-back titles
The Dodgers now have a week off to rest and reset their rotation as they await the winner of the American League Championship Series. With the Mariners taking a 3-2 lead in the series on Friday, playing either team will be challenging, even more so for Ohtani, as both the Mariners and Blue Jays faced him frequently when he played for the Los Angeles Angels.
If Ohtani had a choice, he'd probably hope that Seattle would win in Game 6 on Sunday, given his numbers against them, rather than the Blue Jays.
This is how Ohtani has fared against the Mariners' rotation throughout his career:
vs. Luis Castillo: .364 average, 1.280 OPS in 11 at-bats
vs. Logan Gilbert: .267 average, 1.055 OPS in 15 ABs
vs. George Kirby: .316 average, .907 OPS in 19 ABs
vs. Bryce Miller: .444 average, 1.222 OPS in nine ABs
vs. Bryan Woo: .500 average, .1.625 OPS in six ABs
Ohtani is also 5-0 with a 1.87 ERA and has 66 strikeouts when pitching against the Mariners, per StatMuse.
The Blue Jays are a different story, with their starters better able to keep Ohtani in check. The only one who has struggled is Chris Bassitt, as Ohtani has hit .274 with three home runs against him. Meanwhile, Kevin Gausman has struck him out six times in 12 at-bats, culminating in a .167 average.
Moreover, Ohtani has hit just .154 with six strikeouts against Shane Bieber in 13 career at-bats. That said, he's fared a little better on the mound, with Ohtani going 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA and 25 strikeouts in three appearances vs. Toronto.
The Dodgers will face either the Mariners or Blue Jays in the World Series beginning on Friday, Oct. 24.
