Leeds have the chance to turn a promising Premier League start into something more substantial when Newcastle visit Elland Road on Monday.

Daniel Farke’s side remain unbeaten in the league and sit level with Newcastle on five points after three matches.

Their 1-1 draw at Brighton offered encouragement, with Leeds controlled much of the first hour, going ahead through Jayden Bogle and could have built a far healthier lead before Luka Vušković equalised from a corner.

Ao Tanaka struck the crossbar, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin caused problems in the air. Leeds created enough to win, but their failure to finish Brighton off cost two points.

Wednesday’s 6-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Chelsea was far wilder.

Leeds raced into a two-goal lead before the hosts responded with six, leaving Farke with another reminder that strong periods need better control.

Newcastle will arrive with an unbeaten record of their own under Matthias Jaissle, but they have looked vulnerable, needing a late comeback against Bournemouth and only edged past Millwall in the cup.

Leeds also have a score to settle, having led three times at St James’ Park in January before Harvey Barnes struck in the 102nd minute to complete a remarkable 4-3 Newcastle win.

His speed and direct running could be important against a weakened Newcastle defence.

Leeds must also make better use of Calvert-Lewin’s physical presence than they did during quieter spells at Brighton.

The 6 ft 2 winger has already impressed in several attacking roles too, with his versatility viewed as a major strength.

He has represented Norway at youth level despite Serbian heritage, and one scout told TEAMtalk that his “stature, two-footedness and ability to play centrally” stood out, while his flexibility on the flank was also praised.

That same scout also claimed that "there is nobody like him for his age – probably in the world at this point".

Such praise explains the crowded race, but Leeds have reasons to remain involved, as a clearer route towards senior football could offer them a useful selling point against richer rivals.
