Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayRegis Prograis believes boxing fans have become too quick to dismiss Errol Spence Jr. ahead of his July showdown against Tim Tszyu.
Spence returns after three years out of the ring when he faces Tszyu in Australia on July 25. Questions about his inactivity, age, and the aftermath of his loss to Terence Crawford have led many observers to pick against the former unified welterweight champion.
Prograis is not ready to do that.
“The old Errol Spence man was a killer, bro. People forget how good Errol Spence really was. Errol was a dog at one point in time. He was really a real killer in the ring. Besides the stuff with Crawford, man, if the old Errol comes back, I think I got Errol Spence by landslide,” said Prograis to The Punch Podcast while discussing Spence’s comeback fight against Tszyu.
“If it’s the old Errol, Errol should walk through Tim Tszyu. If it’s the old Errol Spence, he should be able to walk through him. But we don’t know. We don’t know what Errol Spence we’re going to get. That’s the thing. Errol Spence been off for a long time.”
The retired former two-time world champion believes age eventually catches every fighter, particularly when it comes to speed and reflexes.
“The speed will leave you. Power always be there. The reflexes, they do leave, and that’s the main thing you need in boxing. The reflexes, the foot speed, the hand speed. You need that. Power always going to be there,” said Regis.
Prograis also pointed to comments Spence has previously made about having one foot out the door from boxing, saying that can be difficult to reverse.
“If he said that already, one foot out, it’s going to be hard to come back in. What makes you fall in love again? Fall in love and be obsessed with that again? If you did everything already, what are they fighting for? Just a lot of money. If you do it for the money, that’s always the wrong reason,” said Prograis.
Spence and Tszyu are scheduled to meet in one of the year’s most closely watched comeback fights, with Prograis convinced the outcome depends largely on whether any of the old version of Spence is still there.
