No. 1 Nebraska beat No. 16 Penn State 25-20, 25-17, 25-18 on Thursday night at Rec Hall, moving to 14-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten, Hurrdat Sports reported. The Huskers also extended their all-time series lead over the Nittany Lions to 31-13, NCAA.com said.
The result was the 250th career win for Nebraska head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, who reached it faster than all but three other Division I women's coaches. Her career winning percentage stands at .847.
How the Three Sets Played Out
Nebraska opened the first set with a 7-1 lead after a run of Penn State errors that included two Husker blocks.
The Nittany Lions climbed back to within one point, but Nebraska closed on a 5-1 run that featured aces from libero/defensive specialist Laney Choboy and outside hitter Harper Murray, plus a set-point kill from outside hitter Teraya Sigler.
Penn State started the second set with a 3-0 lead. Nebraska went ahead at 5-4 and held control through a 25-17 finish.
The third set was the closest in terms of movement, with four video challenges, three lead changes and two ties, according to NCAA.com. Nebraska still won it 25-18, and out-blocked Penn State 10 to two over the match.
Individual Numbers
Murray led the Huskers with 13 kills. Middle blocker Andi Jackson added 11 kills on 16 swings for a .625 hitting percentage, which lifts her season mark to .503.
Setter Bergen Reilly finished with 34 assists, 16 digs and three blocks. She passed assistant coach Kelly Natter during the second set to take third place on Nebraska's career assists list, behind Nicklin Hames and Fiona Nepo.
Only Hames is ahead of her among rally-scoring era setters.
Sigler played all six rotations for the first time since an injury last week. She had eight kills and five digs. Opposite Virginia Adriano added six kills, and libero Olivia Mauch had eight digs.
For Penn State, Kennedy Martin led all players with 18 kills, and former Husker Whitney Lauenstein had 12. The rest of the Nittany Lions combined for 12 kills.
Penn State hit .230, the second-highest figure against Nebraska this season, while the Huskers hit .419 as a team.
What the Huskers Said
Busboom Kelly told the Huskers Radio Network she did not know about the milestone until a TV interviewer told her. She said she did not think Nebraska played its best volleyball despite hitting over .400, and credited the team's grit when Penn State pushed back.
She also said Nebraska's improved offense away from Jackson means opponents cannot focus on her. Teams that do not fully commit to stopping Jackson, she said, will lose to her.
Murray told Big Ten Network that Reilly got her going early and that the two have been working on their connection over the past few games. Murray has reached double-digit kills in five of her last six matches.
