WHAT STANDS OUT? Here’s a list of things that stand out with the NuAxle adjustable offset axle for the 2025 KTM 450SXF.
(1) Installation. Install the NuAxle with the supplied bushing, aligning the groove in the left fork lug to accommodate the NuAxle. Next, refit the front wheel and orient the axle to your desired position using the supplied tool and the orientation pin on the right-hand side. Torque the axle nut and fork-lug pinch bolts as per OEM torque specs. Safety-test the front brake and then go rip!
(2) Concept. The NuAxle offers suspension tuners, chassis tuners, and everyday riders the ability to adjust, fiddle, and play with steering trail settings at their leisure. The axle adjusts the offset of only the front wheel relative to the steering axis, thereby altering the trail of the motorcycle and changing the distance from the front-tire contact point to the center of the crankshaft, which is called the “front center.”
It’s similar to changing the triple clamp offset, except for a couple of differences. One is the mass being moved with the trail adjustment. The axle only moves the mass of the front tire/wheel assembly, while a triple clamp adjustment moves the mass of the entire front suspension system—a much larger mass change. Another difference is the actual inherent characteristics of the triple clamp itself. Material, design and manufacturing all affect the way the bike feels.
The NuAxle gives the opportunity to have custom setups for varying tracks, soils or riding conditions. Its effectiveness coincides with the physics of well-established steering geometry, meaning the axle works exactly as it should. The NuAxle is a great tool to test geometry setup and fine-tune your bike exactly to your liking.
(3) Performance. The NuAxle is adjustable to any position in a full circle, so you can have some fun while chasing your tail with the most minor changes. We focused on all the way forward and all the way rearward.
Forward position (decreased trail): Steering felt heavier on firm, flat ground and slower on loose soil. The front of the bike felt more stable and more resistant to direction change with a tendency to understeer on corner exits. This setting could be beneficial for soft, deep, sandy terrain.
Aft position (increased trail): Steering felt lighter and quicker on flat, firm ground and quicker (almost twitchy) on deeper soil. The front of the bike felt busier and wanted to turn inward (oversteer) towards the inside of turns. In deeper turns, the front tire tended to crawl up the inside of ruts. This setting could be beneficial for firm ground and tight, quicker-turning performance.
WHAT’S THE SQUAWK? The axle material and machining process inherently changes the feel of the front end compared to the OEM axle. All of our test riders at the intermediate level and above felt a difference in their hands almost immediately between the NuAxle and the OEM axle. Our test riders favored the OEM axle over the NuAxle as feedback from the ground to the rider’s hands was greater and less comfortable. The design and machining process of an eccentric axle with changing cross-sectional diameters along its longitudinal axis will produce an axle with different flex characteristics at different points along its length.
It should be noted that Rekluse offered an adjustable front axle back in 2006, called the Rekluse e-Axle, that also offered 2mm of offset change.
MXA RATING: We love the idea of a simple, elegant method to adjust a singular geometry change without fanfare. This axle offers that, but with a slight loss in ride comfort over the OEM axle it replaces.
