After the closure of the summer transfer window, Leeds United fans can be happy with the additions made in an attempt to hand Daniel Farke the quality he needs for success.

The Whites spent over £90m on new additions during the recent market, subsequently bolstering numerous key areas of the senior ranks for the 2026/27 campaign.

James Trafford was arguably the most important addition of the window, as the future England number one arrived to provide needed quality in the goalkeeping department.

However, there may be a feeling of disappointment behind the scenes at Elland Road, after Farke’s side missed out on a deal for one of their top targets in the closing stage of the window.

Why missing out on Mudryk is a blessing in disguise for Leeds

In an attempt to bolster the attacking department in the closing stages of the summer window, Leeds tried to get a deal over the line for Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk.

The Ukrainian was free to make a temporary move away from Stamford Bridge, leading to Farke’s side making a loan bid for the 25-year-old.

The player’s preference was to remain in the Premier League, and he secured his wish, as the attacker joined Tottenham Hotspur following the Blues' rejection of the offer from the Whites.

However, such a decision proved to be a blessing in disguise for Leeds, with the forward likely needing a period of adaptation before reaching full flow.

Mudryk has failed to appear in the Premier League since December 2024, which no doubt has seen the player lose his sharpness and pace - something which was one of his biggest assets prior to his ban.

He’s also on a mammoth wage package in west London and Farke’s men would have been expected to cover a large portion of his weekly earnings to secure a deal.

Such a move would have been a free hit for the Whites in their attempts for success, but the risks and cost outlay of the deal would have been an unreasonable one given his period out of action.

As a result, they sought a move for Jean-Matteo Bahoya who became their final signing of a hectic summer transfer window.

Why £25m Leeds man could be Farke's own Mudryk

After the closure of the window, Farke will be content with the work conducted, especially providing him with key transfers within the attacking department in Yorkshire.

Wilfried Gnonto and Joel Piroe both moved on to pastures new, whilst new additions Harry Wilson and Bahoya will hope to cement their place as regular starters at Elland Road.

Brenden Aaronson also looks as though he will play a key part in their efforts this season, as the American international penned a deal until the summer of 2029 in recent weeks.

However, the biggest winner from the failed Mudryk pursuit could well be winger Dan James, who will certainly have a point to prove throughout the 2026/27 campaign.

The Welshman, who cost £25m back in August 2021, only started six top-flight games last term, as injury prevented the 28-year-old from making a bigger impact in Yorkshire.

However, his return to fitness will offer Farke a fresh option within the final third, with the attacker a player who could offer a similar output to the new Tottenham loanee.

James’ electric pace has made him a constant threat to the opposition in the Premier League, with his top speed of 36.1km/h last term the fourth highest of any player in the division. Exactly like Mudryk, he's one of the quickest wide players in world football.

The similarities do not stop there. Indeed, like the Ukrainian, he’s often been questioned about his end product in front of goal and understandably given his inability to register a goal or assist across all competitions in 2025/26.

However, he’s shown glimpses of being more composed in front of goal already this term, as seen with his excellent finish against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup last month.

James subsequently placed 100% of his efforts on target that night, and caused the Reds no end of trouble with his pace - helping Farke’s men reach the third round for the first time in four years.

His ability to pick out a teammate was also evident that night at the City Ground, with the Welsh international creating the most chances of any player on the pitch.

There’s no denying his career has massively stagnated over recent years, but this season presents a massive opportunity for the winger to become a regular under Farke again.

Missing out on Mudryk may have been a disappointment, but it hands James the perfect piece of motivation to prove that he’s capable of being a regular starter in 2026/27.
