Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets have reached an agreement on a two-year, $90 million contract extension.
In doing so, Durant accepted roughly $30 million less than the maximum amount he was eligible for under extension rules with Houston.
The Rockets acquired Durant earlier in the offseason in a major trade that sent Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the draft rights to Khaman Maluach, and up to four second-round picks and swap options to complete the deal.
From the moment the trade was finalized, both sides consistently expressed confidence that an extension would eventually get done.
Durant choosing to sign for significantly less than the max is expected to give Houston increased financial flexibility as they build the roster around him over the coming years.
The Rockets already have Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. secured on long-term deals.
Tari Eason remains eligible for an extension through Monday, while Amen Thompson will become extension-eligible next summer.
