Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayJaron ‘Boots’ Ennis says Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez remains one of boxing’s smartest fighters after spending time sparring with him last year.
The sessions took place while Canelo was preparing for his undisputed super middleweight title defense against Terence Crawford. Ennis was also in camp at the time ahead of his junior middleweight debut against Uisma Lima.
“He was cool, he was regular, he is a funny dude,” Ennis said while speaking to All The Smoke Fight. “People don’t know, but when he speaks English super fluent, he is super funny, that whole team is funny.”
Ennis also spoke about the value of sharing rounds with a fighter who has more than 70 professional bouts.
“My sparring sessions went great, I was in there being myself and having fun,” Ennis said. “I was picking his brain, he is like 70 fights in, so he knows different things and little tricks.”
According to Ennis, Canelo’s patience and composure stood out more than anything else during the sessions.
“He was smart, he takes his time. He is like super patient, the same way as when he fights,” Ennis said. “Honestly, that might be his best [attribute].”
Ennis was also asked directly about Canelo’s punching power after the sparring sessions.
“It was cool,” Ennis said when asked about the power. “No, not the hardest I’ve been in with.”
The sparring sessions sparked anger from some Terence Crawford fans, who accused Ennis of betraying Crawford by helping Canelo prepare for their undisputed title fight last September.
Canelo later lost his undisputed championship to Terence Crawford by decision last September, while Ennis continued his move up in weight with a first-round knockout victory over Uisma Lima.
Ennis is now scheduled to challenge unified junior middleweight champion Xander Zayas on June 27 in Brooklyn. Canelo is expected to return on September 12 against Christian Mbilli in an attempt to regain the WBC super middleweight title.
