Contract negotiations between Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons have reached a standstill, and the situation may not be resolved anytime soon.

According to Ramona Shelburne, talks between Duren and the Pistons are currently stalled and could extend well into August.

Jake Fischer also reported that the possibility of Duren signing his $9.62 million qualifying offer remains on the table, a move that would allow the All-Star center to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027.

The prolonged negotiations come after one of the biggest breakout seasons by a young player in the NBA. Duren earned his first All-Star selection and was voted to the All-NBA Third Team after averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 65.0% from the field across 70 regular-season games.

Detroit extended Duren a qualifying offer on June 22, making him a restricted free agent and retaining the right to match any offer sheet. However, the two sides have yet to agree on the value of a long-term contract.

Reports earlier this offseason indicated Duren became eligible for a designated rookie maximum extension worth approximately $287 million over five years after earning All-NBA honors. Detroit’s reported offers, however, have been closer to $175 million over five seasons, creating a sizable gap in negotiations.

Chris Haynes previously reported that Duren has grown frustrated with how the Pistons have handled his restricted free agency. According to Haynes, the 22-year-old would prefer to leave Detroit if he ultimately signs the qualifying offer, sacrificing significant guaranteed money in exchange for the opportunity to choose his next destination as an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The dispute comes despite Duren playing a central role in Detroit’s dramatic turnaround. Behind Duren and All-NBA guard Cade Cunningham, the Pistons finished 60-22 during the 2025-26 regular season, the best record in the Eastern Conference after winning just 43 games over the previous two seasons combined. Cunningham finished fifth in MVP voting after averaging 23.9 points and 9.9 assists.

Duren also ranked among the league’s most efficient interior scorers. He increased his scoring average from 11.8 points in 2024-25 to 19.5 while converting 65.0% of his field-goal attempts and averaging 7.5 made baskets per game. He also finished 11th in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Detroit’s hesitation has reportedly been influenced by Duren’s playoff performance. In 14 postseason games, he averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Pistons advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals before losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games after holding a 2-0 series lead.

Earlier in free agency, Duren reportedly explored potential sign-and-trade scenarios involving the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. Those possibilities have since diminished after the Lakers acquired Walker Kessler, while the Pistons have maintained they are not interested in facilitating a sign-and-trade.

Detroit has nevertheless continued reshaping its roster around Cunningham this offseason. The Pistons created additional financial flexibility through a six-team trade completed on July 8 while adding veterans John Collins, Taurean Prince, Gary Harris and Isaiah Joe.
