Victor Wembanyama had an awkward but understandable interaction with a young fan this week, politely declining to autograph a Jalen Brunson jersey while making it clear why he would not sign another NBA star’s merchandise.

A video circulating on social media captured the exchange as the fan repeatedly called out to the San Antonio Spurs franchise centerpiece.

“Wemby! Wemby! Sign my jersey! Sign my jersey please!… Wemby… will you sign my jersey?” the child asked.

Wembanyama looked at the jersey before responding, “That’s not… That’s… Jalen Brunson…” He then declined to sign it.

It is common practice for professional athletes to avoid signing apparel featuring another player’s name. Many players prefer to autograph only their own jerseys, team gear, basketballs, trading cards, or blank memorabilia to avoid confusion over authenticity or creating collectibles associated with another player.

The moment also comes only weeks after Wembanyama and Brunson met on the NBA’s biggest stage. The New York Knicks defeated the Spurs in five games to win the 2026 NBA Finals, capturing the franchise’s first championship since 1973.

Brunson earned Finals MVP after leading New York throughout the postseason. Across 19 playoff games, the All-Star point guard averaged 28.4 points, 6.1 assists and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 46.5% from the field and 84.6% from the free-throw line. He also made 2.4 three-pointers per game as the Knicks finished off a dominant playoff run.

New York entered the postseason as the Eastern Conference’s No. 3 seed after finishing 53-29 before eliminating the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Knicks swept both Philadelphia and Cleveland before defeating San Antonio 4-1 in the Finals.

Wembanyama was outstanding despite falling short of a championship. The 22-year-old averaged 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in 22 playoff games while shooting 48.5% from the field. He anchored a Spurs team that finished 62-20, second in the Western Conference, before advancing past the Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder.
