Glasgow Rangers beat their city rivals for only the second time in all competitions since March 2025 when they secured a 3-0 victory in the League Cup on Sunday.

Derek McInnes masterminded a comprehensive win in the quarter-finals of the competition and became the first Gers manager in history to beat Celtic by more than two goals in his first match against them.

Dan Neil struck twice either side of a first Light Blues goal for £9m summer signing Kevin Kelsy, who announced himself to the Ibrox crowd with a terrific left-footed finish.

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has, frustratingly, dominated too many of the derby clashes between the two teams in recent years, but that was not the case on Sunday.

The Hoops skipper is a controller in the number six position because of his metronomic play with the ball at his feet, dictating matches at the base of the midfield.

He usually helps his side to control the game and break down opponents by evading pressure and knitting play together with clever movements and decisions with the ball.

McInnes, though, completely nullified the left-footed star with an impressive tactical set-up that prevented the midfielder from taking control of the game.

The Scottish boss played with a hybrid formation that saw James Penrice invert from left-back to central midfield, bulking up the Gers midfield alongside Dan Neil and Nicolas Raskin, which closed down the space that McGregor had to work with.

McInnes also deployed two strikers, in Ryan Naderi and Kelsy, and the two frontmen constantly closed down Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales, which meant that they were unable to play the ball out from the back to McGregor with ease.

That meant that Rangers stopped the supply line to McGregor whilst also closing down the space that he had when he did get the ball, and that prevented him from dictating the play in possession.

Whilst it was the tactical moves by McInnes that allowed the Gers to shut the Celtic captain down, one of the team's players, in particular, embarrassed the former Scotland international.

In the absence of Lawrence Shankland, who sustained a hamstring injury that could keep him out for four months, Dan Neil donned the captain's armband for his first Old Firm clash on Sunday.

The central midfielder stepped up to the plate for the Scottish giants with a sublime display in the middle of the park, and is now well on his way to becoming the club's new Joe Aribo.

Not since the Nigerian midfielder have the Gers had a central midfielder who offers mobility, physicality, and a threat in the final third, as the left-footed star scored 26 goals in 149 matches for the club.

Neil looked Aribo-esque when he evaded McGregor twice to find space on the edge of the box to score the first and third goals for Rangers against Celtic at Ibrox.

The English star positioned himself perfectly to get the better of the Celtic captain, who completely switched off defensively, and he was able to get both of his shots away before the Scottish ace could get out to close him down.

During his time with Sunderland, Neil showed that he does have the quality to make an impact at the top end of the pitch as both a scorer and a creator of goals, just as Aribo did for Rangers.

Now, if the 24-year-old star can embarrass and get the better of McGregor, who has been a thorn in the club's side too many times, then he could do the same to other midfielders in the Scottish Premiership throughout the season.

The Rangers skipper completely dominated Celtic with his outstanding display in the middle of the park on Sunday, playing a crucial role in the win for the home side, and it is now down to him to remain consistent in the coming weeks and months.

If Neil can continue to deliver performances at that level week-in-week-out for McInnes, the midfield star could be the club's next version of Aribo and help the Gers to finally secure silverware, having gone almost two years without a trophy.
