Gabriel Moreno's has become a foundational player for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but his breakout hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves.

Moreno has been overshadowed by other elite NL catchers such as Drake Baldwin (Braves) and William Contreras (Brewers). Since Baldwin won NL Rookie of the Year in 2025, he has continued to be a solid offensive catcher in 2026. He is tied for third in home runs (24) among primary catchers this season. 

But Moreno is right with Baldwin in terms of RBI production, ranking sixth (75) behind Baldwin's 77. While Contreras ranks higher than both with 88, Moreno leads all catchers with a .307 batting average and he provides elite framing behind the plate. 

Moreno has put up career-high numbers as a top offensive backstop this season, with 15 home runs, a stellar .870 OPS, .385 OBP and 136 hits.

Moreno is on pace to join elite company, ranking behind Buster Posey (2017) who was the last qualified catcher to bat .300 or higher with 15 or more home runs. With two weeks remaining in the season and Moreno batting .423 with three home runs in his last seven games, he has a good chance to meet the mark. 

Despite the Diamondbacks losing a series to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, Moreno did his part. He was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. In their 4-2 loss on Tuesday, Moreno was productive with two hits, including a home run, a walk and a stolen base. He also caught a runner stealing in the sixth and had a pickoff in the seventh. 

Moreno has quietly raked as a standout this season with a 5.0 fWAR, the 10th position player to reach the mark this year.

While the Diamondbacks are surely thrilled, Moreno is deserving of attention from the baseball world at-large.
