Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayGervonta Davis appears to be moving closer toward a mandatory defense against Floyd Schofield after Schofield’s father said discussions with Premier Boxing Champions were already underway before the WBA officially ordered the fight.
The WBA recently ordered Davis to defend his lightweight title against Schofield, giving both sides until June 22 to reach a deal. The fight now looks increasingly likely after earlier reports linked Davis to a rematch with Isaac Cruz at 140.
“Trust me, they are on that phone already,” Floyd Schofield Sr. told FightHype. “They was already in preliminaries before the ruling, they was negotiating.”
Schofield Sr. said Davis has not rejected the fight and believes the focus is now centered on financial terms.
“Tank didn’t say that he didn’t want this fight,” said Schofield Sr. “Right now, they are in negotiations, I guess they are seeing if they can meet his demands, for how much he is going to possibly ask for, and we are going to go from there.”
Schofield Sr. added that his side is now waiting for paperwork.
“We are waiting on the contract,” he said. “That is all we waiting on.”
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) has not won a fight since June 2024 and has fought only once over the last 14 months, battling Lamont Roach Jr. to a draw in March 2025. The inactivity previously led the WBA to move him to champion in recess before restoring his status at lightweight.
The unbeaten Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) is viewed as one of the youngest contenders in the division at 23 and would be taking a major step up against Davis if the negotiations are finalized.
