ESPN’s first look at the 2027 NBA Draft suggests a considerably weaker class than recent years, with no clear-cut franchise prospect emerging at the top of the board.

Kansas freshman Tyran Stokes currently holds the No. 1 spot in the early mock draft thanks to his combination of size, athleticism, and playmaking ability. H

owever, scouts continue to monitor concerns surrounding his outside shooting, decision-making, and consistency, leaving plenty of room for movement before next year’s draft.

Arkansas guard Jordan Smith Jr. and Arizona combo guard Caleb Holt are viewed as the top challengers for the first overall selection should Stokes fail to separate himself.

League executives have compared the overall strength of the class to the 2024 draft, noting that both the domestic and international talent pools appear thinner than those of recent years.

The 2027 draft will also introduce the NBA’s new lottery system, which expands the lottery to 16 teams while preventing franchises from winning the lottery in consecutive years or landing a top-five selection in three straight drafts.

The changes are designed to reduce incentives for teams to intentionally lose games.

Several players who withdrew from the 2026 draft have strengthened the projected class, including UConn guard Braylon Mullins and Florida forward Thomas Haugh, both of whom are expected to be among the top prospects after returning to school.

In ESPN’s early projections, the Kings own the No. 1 pick and are matched with Stokes, while the Bulls are projected to select Jordan Smith Jr. second and the Grizzlies land Caleb Holt at No. 3.

Houston owns two lottery picks through Brooklyn and Phoenix, with Charlotte, Washington, Atlanta, and New Orleans also projected inside the top 10.
