Matchroom reports that Ernesto Mercado has suffered an injury and will not be going through with his fight against Jonathan Montrel on Saturday, June 14th at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Mercado Injured, Fight Canceled

The unbeaten light welterweight prospect Mercado (17-0, 16 KOs) had been scheduled to fight Montrel in a 10-round fight on the undercard of Richardson Hitchins vs. George Kambosos Jr. on DAZN. Matchroom didn’t disclose what type of injury Mercado, 23, had suffered. Mercado-Montrel was going to be fighting on the preliminary portion of the card.

Losing Mercado from the card is a disappointment because it would have been interesting to see him fight. He’s moved against increasingly better opposition, and it won’t be long before he’s fighting the top contenders at 140.

Mercado is interested in fighting Keyshawn Davis now that he’s decided to move up to light welterweight after being stripped of his WBO lightweight title last Friday after failing to make weight. It’s probable that Keyshawn won’t take Mercado up on his offer to fight him.

Avoided Boxer’s Next Steps

Ernesto is in a position where he’s going to be avoided until he captures a world title at 140. None of the top fighters are going to willingly fight Mercado without a belt or him becoming a mandatory for one of the titles. Recently, Mercado called out Shakur Stevenson, but he pretended he didn’t know who he was and ignored his callout.

This news from Matchroom comes a day after Mercado called out Nahir Albright, saying he wanted to relieve him of his title.

The undercard still features many notable fighters, including Andy Cruz, Teremoana Jr., Zaquin Moses, and Pablo Valdez. Promoter Eddie Hearn has assembled an excellent undercard to go along with the main event between Hitchins and Kambosos.
