Devin Haney picks Terence Crawford to defeat Canelo Alvarez in a tough fight on September 13th at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The former two-division world champion Haney says he likes the “skills” of Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) to lead him to victory over undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs).

Why Haney Picks Crawford

“Bud has the skills and discipline to win. But Canelo has all that with the size,” said Devin Haney to the Ring Champs channel, talking about the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford matchup on September 13th. “It’s a good fight. I’m happy that Bud got the fight.”

It’s not just the size. Canelo has the power and experience against better opposition during his career. He’s faced fighters like Gennadiy Golovkin, Erislandy Lara, William Scull, Caleb Plant, Dmitry Bivol, and Sergey Kovalev. The only names on Crawford’s resume are Errol Spence and Israil Madrimov.

“I think it’s a good fight for boxing. Of course,” said Haney when asked if his dad, Bill Haney, is picking Crawford to win. “I’m picking Bud, too. But will it be an easy task? No. But if anybody can do it, I think Bud can.”

Boxing’s Business Oddity

Canelo vs. Crawford is one of the oddities involving fighters from vastly different weight classes being put together for business purposes.

Turki Alalshikh could have made it more sporting if he had set up a three-fighter gauntlet that Crawford had to go through in 12 months to earn the Canelo fight. It would be like Crawford having to go through a minefield filled with buried anti-personnel mines with hair-triggers set to go off under the slightest pressure. That would have made it so much more interesting to see Crawford go through these three fighters first:

  1. David Benavidez
  2. David Morrell
  3. Osleys Iglesias

Crawford’s Post-Fight Options

“What else?” said Devin on whether Crawford should retire after the fight. If he wins or loses, what else is there to do? He’s been undefeated twice in two weight classes. What more does he need to do?” said Haney.

Devin doesn’t give his reasons for why he believes Crawford will defeat Canelo, so fans are left wondering if his choice is based on him rooting for the smaller fighter that has a fighting style similar to his own, but with less holding and movement.
