UFC boss Dana White has said that Ciryl Gane has not been promoted to undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

It’s safe to say that Ciryl Gane isn’t the biggest fan favorite in mixed martial arts right now. While he’s an exceptionally talented fighter, his eye-poking against Tom Aspinall and his victory over the always popular Alex Pereira have left him in a strange position.

Ciryl Gane is the interim champion in the UFC’s heavyweight division, and after Aspinall relinquished the undisputed belt, it was assumed that he would automatically be promoted to that position. Otherwise, there would be a whole lot of questions about the relevance of the interim strap and why it was introduced in the first place.

As per Dana White, however, Ciryl Gane isn’t quite there yet, and he will have to get back in there before he can proclaim himself to be the best of the best.

“Does it make (Gane) the undisputed champion? No. He’s still gotta fight,” White told Sportsnet.

“We’ll see how this whole thing plays out with Aspinall,” White said. “Ciryl will fight, and we’ll see who becomes the champion. I mean, this isn’t the first time this has ever happened. It’s happening right now with Valentina Shevchenko too, so this is nothing now. This happens sometimes. It’s unfortunate; it’s not the best outcome, but it is what it is.”

Given the journey that Gane took to get to this point, it certainly feels appropriate that he competes again in order to try and cement his position as the king of the division.
