NAGOYA, Japan – Defending women’s volleyball champion China and Los Angeles Olympics-bound Thailand hope to start their campaigns at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on a winning note when they take on separate rivals on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
The Chinese will collide with the Philippines at 1 p.m., while the Thais tangle with the Mongolians at 4 p.m.
Both the Chinese and the Thai teams are fancied to hurdle their rivals without much trouble owing to their impressive resumes. Their games will be played at the Okazaki Sogo Park gym.
Capping a three-game schedule in Okazaki is the duel between Chinese-Taipei and Kyrgyzstan at 7:20 p.m.
The Thais are coming off a pulsating 3-2 win over the Chinese in the recent Asian Volleyball Confederation Continental Championship in Tianjin, China, earning for themselves a ticket to the LA Olympics.
While the Chinese have dominated the Games in the past nine editions, the Thais are determined to win their first-ever gold medal in the quadrennial event.
Their best finish in the continental showpiece was fourth during the 2018 Jakarta Games in Indonesia.
Also expected to coast to an easy win is, of course, the host nation.
The Japanese will once again showcase their massive arsenal against Nepal to cap another three-game schedule over at the Park Arena Komaki in Komaki – just north of this beautiful city.
They won the five straight times in the Games since first at the 1962 Jakarta Games, but with the support of the crowd, the Japanese are hoping to end a string of near misses.
