The Boston Celtics are approaching the 2026 offseason with confidence following their blockbuster trade of Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers. Team officials view the move as a roster reset that preserves flexibility around Jayson Tatum while adding draft capital and veteran forward Paul George.

Chris Haynes reported that Boston views the deal as a defining pivot rather than the start of a wider teardown. “I think if Boston makes any moves, it will be around the edges. This was their super move and they feel really good about how they positioned themselves. They like the structure of their roster moving forward into next season,” Haynes said.

The Celtics finished the 2025-26 regular season 56-26, second in the Eastern Conference behind the Detroit Pistons at 60-22. Boston entered the playoffs as the Atlantic Division winner before losing to the 76ers in a seven-game first-round series.

Brown, who averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists across 71 games, ranked among the league’s most productive wings while shooting 47.7% from the field and 34.7% from three. He earned All-NBA Second Team honors and finished sixth in MVP voting.

The trade sends Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for George, a 2028 first-round pick with swap rights, an unprotected 2031 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2030 second-round pick. The deal pairs Brown with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia while giving Boston long-term draft assets alongside Tatum.

Tony Jones described the organizational shift in blunt terms. “He’s also polarizing, thoughtful, well-spoken, outspoken, expensive and had apparently fallen so out of favor with Brad Stevens and the rest of Boston’s front office that he was traded for relative pennies on the dollar,” Jones wrote on The Athletic.

Tatum appeared in only 16 regular-season games, averaging 21.8 points and 10.0 rebounds while shooting 32.9% from three, limiting continuity alongside Brown during the year.

The Celtics now project a rotation centered on Tatum, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and a deep group of rotation forwards led by Sam Hauser and Neemias Queta. Boston also holds multiple future first-round selections acquired in the trade, including a 2031 unprotected pick.

Boston has so far added Mitchell Robinson, Mike Conley and brought back Amari Williams.
