Giannis Antetokounmpo says he is embracing a new chapter with the Miami Heat, but the two-time NBA MVP acknowledged that the transition away from the Milwaukee Bucks has not been easy.

Speaking about his move to Miami, Antetokounmpo admitted he is stepping into unfamiliar territory after spending his entire 13-year NBA career with Milwaukee.

“I’m happy to be in Miami,” he said. “In Miami now, I won’t lie, I don’t feel comfortable. I don’t know the team, but I’m going over there and I will do my best. I’ve been doing this my whole life, and I hope it turns out well. I love the city of Milwaukee. I will love Milwaukee until I die. I bleed purple and green. It’s very simple. They made me who I am today.”

The comments reflect the emotional impact of one of the biggest trades of the 2026 offseason. After being selected by Milwaukee with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Antetokounmpo developed from a raw prospect into one of the greatest players in franchise history. Across 895 regular-season games with the Bucks, he averaged 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.2 blocks while shooting 55.4% from the field.

His résumé in Milwaukee includes two NBA MVP awards, the 2020 Defensive Player of the Year award, multiple First Team All-NBA selections, and an NBA championship. Even during an injury-shortened 2025-26 campaign, Antetokounmpo remained one of the league’s most dominant players, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and shooting a career-best 62.4% from the field in 36 games before the blockbuster deal.

Miami acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, two future unprotected first-round picks, a pick swap, and a second-round selection. The trade signaled a dramatic shift for both organizations, with Milwaukee beginning a rebuild while the Heat pushed all-in on championship contention.

The Heat finished the 2025-26 season 43-39 and reached the Play-In Tournament before reshaping their roster around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Miami retained Andrew Wiggins, re-signed Simone Fontecchio, added Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency, and projects one of the NBA’s most imposing defensive frontcourts with Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.

For Miami, the expectation is immediate contention. Antetokounmpo is under contract for $58.5 million in 2026-27 and holds a $62.8 million player option for the following season. His adjustment to a new locker room, coaching staff, and system will be among the NBA’s biggest storylines entering the 2026-27 campaign.
