Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayCanelo Alvarez doesn’t see much suspense in Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight title fight against Rico Verhoeven on Saturday night at the Pyramids of Giza. Like many fighters and fans heading into the event, Canelo expects Usyk’s boxing experience to take over quickly against a kickboxing star stepping into an elite-level heavyweight fight.
“Usyk is going to win for sure. Knockout, maybe four or five rounds,” said Canelo to DAZN.
The prediction adds to the growing pile of one-sided forecasts surrounding the fight. Verhoeven’s size and kickboxing record have created curiosity around the event, but most of the boxing world still sees it as a dangerous assignment for someone with almost no professional boxing background.
Usyk enters the fight after back-to-back wins over Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois, along with his two victories over Anthony Joshua. Rico, meanwhile, has not boxed professionally since a four-round fight back in 2014.
Canelo also explained why he has become such a big admirer of Usyk over the years, saying the respect goes beyond what happens in the ring.
“I love Usyk. I think he’s one of the greats. He’s a good guy, and I always enjoy the time when I have the opportunity to see him,” said Canelo. “I don’t show myself to many events but when I see him it’s a really good time. I admire him. He’s very disciplined, and I’m glad to know him.”
An expected Usyk win would immediately push the conversation toward his next move at heavyweight. Agit Kabayel remains in position as the WBC interim champion, while unbeaten contender Moses Itauma is also being heavily discussed as part of the division’s next wave.
Canelo, meanwhile, returns in September when he challenges Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title in Saudi Arabia.
