Canelo Alvarez showed little interest in revisiting a fight with David Benavidez after Benavidez’s cruiserweight title win earlier this month. The Mexican star questioned whether Benavidez can still make the light heavyweight limit after bulking up to defeat Gilberto Ramirez.
Canelo dismissed the latest callout and questioned whether Benavidez could even return to the 175-pound division after bulking up for cruiserweight.
“Every single boxer in any division is calling me out. It’s nothing new to me,” said Canelo Alvarez in a media session with Boxing News.
“He did good in the fight [against Ramirez]. I’m not surprised [he called me out], but I don’t think he can make 175 anymore. It’s not my problem.”
Benavidez has been linked to several major fights since beating Ramirez, including possible bouts against Dmitry Bivol and Jai Opetaia. The win also strengthened his standing across multiple divisions after already holding the WBC light heavyweight title.
Canelo, meanwhile, remains focused on his September 12 fight against WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli in Riyadh. Although he has previously fought at 175 pounds, his comments made it sound unlikely that a Benavidez fight is anywhere close right now.
Benavidez has continued calling for the fight despite Canelo showing little interest over the last five years.
