No. 12 Arizona State volleyball swept No. 8 Stanford 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 on Thursday at the San Luis Obispo Classic, picking up a fourth ranked win this season, according to NCAA.com.

The loss was Stanford's third in its last four matches. Arizona State had already knocked off then-No. 2 Texas, No. 14 Minnesota and No. 24 Oregon earlier in the season.

Stanford made one push, building a 24-23 lead in the third set, but Arizona State closed the door to finish off the sweep.

Clinton, Glover and Vajagic Share the Load

Graduate outside hitter Aniya Clinton and opposite Noemie Glover combined for 31.5 of Arizona State's 65 points, per NCAA.com. Clinton hit .522 for the match, and thesundevils.com reported it was a season-high 15 kills for her, tied for the team lead.

Junior outside hitter Una Vajagic, who transferred to Tempe this summer from Wisconsin, also reached double-digit kills.

SI.com reported that Vajagic, Clinton and Glover each finished with 14 or more kills.

Vajagic added double-digit digs, a service ace and an assist, accounting for 17 of Arizona State's points in that count.

Glover's night pushed her season kill total to 126, the team lead, with Vajagic close behind at 124.

Freshman setter Elle Mottola set a career high with 45 assists, her second match this season with 40 or more, thesundevils.com reported.

Arizona State also piled up 22 kills in the third set alone to finish off Stanford's late rally, according to SI.com.

Arizona State's defense backed up the attack. The Sun Devils recorded 12 total blocks and out-hit Stanford 15 kills to 10 in the opening set, per NCAA.com.

Harvey Keeps Stanford Competitive

Stanford outside hitter Jordyn Harvey posted a match-high 18 kills on 33 attempts while hitting .455, according to NCAA.com. It was not enough to offset Arizona State's balanced attack across three hitters.

A Fast Start Under Van Niel

Arizona State finished the 2025 season with eight ranked wins, a program record, according to SI.com. Four matches into this season, the Sun Devils are already halfway to that mark.

Ranked upsets have been common early this year across the sport; Vanderbilt also collected its [own first ranked win -> Texas Rallies, Purdue Claims Tournament Title, Vanderbilt Earns First Ranked Win] at a recent tournament.

Head coach JJ Van Niel, who took over the program in 2023, now has 20 ranked wins in four seasons, six of them against top-10 opponents, thesundevils.com reported.

SI.com noted the Sun Devils had opened their prior tournament, the Snyder-Park Classic, with a loss to unranked UC Davis before righting themselves.

Arizona State is scheduled to close its non-conference slate against Cal Poly on Friday, Sept. 18, per SI.com. Stanford will play Santa Clara before also facing Cal Poly as it tries to regroup.
