Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayJoshua says the storyline surrounding Usyk and Verhoeven makes a rematch more appealing than an immediate WBC title defense
Anthony Joshua says he would rather watch Oleksandr Usyk face Rico Verhoeven again than move directly into a heavyweight title defense against Agit Kabayel. The former heavyweight champion believes the May 23 fight created enough drama and unfinished business to justify an immediate rematch.
“They are both phenomenal options, aren’t they? As a fight fan, I want to see Rico vs. Usyk again,” Joshua said on the Mr. Verzace podcast.
“Just that rematch, you know how big rematches are; they have got a storyline, they have got history, Egypt, the stoppage, Usyk was apparently losing on the scorecards, there is that backstory.
“So, it is like we are already building on foundations that have already been cemented.
“Agit Kabayel and Usyk is still a massive fight, I like the way that Agit is calling him out, but as I said, from a pure fan point of view, I think the rematch would just be amazing.”
Kabayel has held the WBC interim title since stopping Zhilei Zhang in February 2025 and strengthened his position earlier this year with a win over Damian Knyba. The unbeaten German has repeatedly been linked to a September title challenge and is viewed by many as Usyk’s next mandatory obligation.
Joshua’s comments come as debate continues over whether Usyk should revisit the Verhoeven fight after the kickboxing star produced a far more competitive performance than most observers expected. Verhoeven entered the bout as a heavy underdog but remained in the fight deep into the championship rounds before being stopped.
Any rematch would likely require Kabayel to wait longer for his opportunity. His promoter, Frank Warren, has previously indicated that he expects the WBC to honor Kabayel’s position as interim champion and deliver the title shot that has already been promised.
