Amanda Serrano matched Christy Martin’s women’s boxing record with her 32nd career knockout on Saturday night and wasted no time setting a new goal. After stopping Cheyenne Hanson in the second round, Serrano said she plans to break the record and secure her 50th professional victory in her next fight.
The unified WBA and WBO featherweight champion stopped Cheyenne Hanson in the second round at the El Paso County Coliseum in Texas, improving to 49-4-1 with her 32nd career knockout. The stoppage tied Martin for the most knockout wins in women’s boxing history.
“I can break it in the next one,” Serrano said after the fight. “I can do the 50th and break it in the next one. Let’s go. That’s the goal.”
Serrano overwhelmed Hanson before the referee halted the fight at 2:25 of round two. The seven-division champion said the three-minute rounds gave her the extra time she needed to solve her opponent after using the opening round to gather information.
“This is my time,” Serrano said. “The three minutes we get to set up our shots. The first round I was trying to figure her out, trying to land my shots. When I went to the corner, I told Jordan, ‘I got it.’ I was just feeling her out. I got it now.”
“I think the three minutes give us more time to have fun in here. That’s what I was doing. I was having fun.”
The victory came in front of a record crowd for combat sports at the El Paso County Coliseum. Serrano used her post-fight interview to praise fans for supporting women’s boxing.
“This is what we need for the sport to grow. Sell out arenas. Not just for me. I’m so happy that women can sell out, and we’re showing, proving day after day, fight after fight, that we can sell out. Fans want to see us.”
Serrano is now one knockout away from standing alone atop the women’s boxing record book. Her next win would also be the 50th victory of her professional career.
