Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayRound by Round Radio defended Zuffa Boxing’s decision to release Oleksandr Gvozdyk while accusing traditional boxing media of applying a double standard. The response came after talkSPORT claimed Dana White’s company had “brutally axed” the former light heavyweight champion following one defeat.
“This is the narrative traditional boxing and media is pushing against Zuffa Boxing,” RBR stated on X. “Zuffa Boxing cut a 39-year-old boxer after being KO’d. But when TR or Matchroom do it, there isn’t any news, or they use words like ‘let go or released,’ and everyone says, ‘It’s part of the business, it’s just business.’”
RBR’s defense has merit. Major promoters regularly release fighters after losses without those departures being described as brutal. Top Rank and Matchroom have separated from younger boxers with far more career time remaining, yet those moves normally receive little attention beyond a brief announcement.
Gvozdyk does not fit the type of boxer Zuffa needs while constructing a closed league. He is 39, carries little social-media influence, and offers limited long-term commercial value.
Callum Walsh represents the opposite model at 154 pounds. Zuffa can keep him active, select opponents from within its roster, and build his following over several years. Every win increases the value of both the fighter and the league promoting him.
Even if Zuffa eventually operates like the UFC and keeps most of its competition inside one system, transforming Gvozdyk into a star would remain difficult. His name carries recognition among dedicated boxing followers, but he has limited appeal beyond that audience and little time remaining to expand it.
Gvozdyk did provide Zuffa with an entertaining fight. He dropped Radivoje Kalajdzic twice and led 60-52, 60-52, and 59-53 before a right hand knocked him out in the seventh round.
Kalajdzic supplied the result Zuffa can market. He survived two knockdowns, delivered a dramatic finish, and earned another booking against Craig Richards on September 26. Keeping the winner and releasing the older boxer represents a cold business decision, but hardly an extraordinary one.
“Brutally axed” turns a standard contractual option into an attack on Zuffa. The company deserves scrutiny as it tries to gain greater control over fighters, rankings and championships, but this routine exercise of a contractual option does not require tabloid treatment.
