There are statistics, both basic and advanced, that contextualize the Yankees’ struggles through this plummet. From first-inning ERA to unearned run total to runs per game, they paint a picture that helps explain how the best team in the American League through June 19, a date on which Aaron Boone’s club was 46-28, has been the worst, at 3-12, since.

More illustrative than any number, though, may be this: On Sunday they dropped a series to the Twins. It was as if the Yankees unleashed on their perpetual punching bag, and the bag ricocheted back into their face.

With another demoralizing, bad-in-every-facet smacking in front of 39,155 unhappy fans, the Yankees lost the game 6-1 — and, for just a second time in their past 14, a series against the Twins, who had not taken a set from the Yankees in The Bronx since 2014.

Joe Ryan became the first Minnesota pitcher to throw seven shutout innings in the new Yankee Stadium and the first to do so at a Yankee Stadium since Johan Santana on July 27, 2005.

The Yankees (49-40) have lost nine of 10 and now visit the division leaders in Tampa, where they were embarrassed in April.

“It’s been frustrating,” said Cody Bellinger, who with Ben Rice is the best healthy hitter in a lineup that has scored 47 runs in its past 17 games (2.76 per). “We’re in a little bit of a storm right now. You can’t run away from a storm. It’ll keep on chasing you. Gotta take it head on.”

Over the past few years, the Yankees lineup has made a habit of collapsing without Aaron Judge. That has remained true this year, Sunday totaling three hits in seven innings against Ryan and managing two more against the Twins bullpen.

But every other area of the game has caved in, too.

“We haven’t hit much,” Boone acknowledged of a lineup in which no one has stepped up without Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. “We haven’t played well. We haven’t pitched our best. All that adds up.”

Sunday was a prime example. Just look at their:

— Defense, which let up two more unearned runs to make it 29 in 15 games. There were obvious misplays, like Anthony Volpe’s failure to handle a chopper off the bat of Ryan Kreidler, which was a catalyst in a two-run Twins sixth inning, and subtler mistakes.

With runners on first and second with no outs in the fifth, Trent Grisham took a poor route to a fly ball, was backpedaling when he caught it and did not rush a throw in to the infield, ensuring both runners were able to tag up.

— Starting pitching, with Ryan Weathers unable to apply gauze to a unit that remains bleeding.

During a start in which Weathers was under the weather, the lefty did not record an out in the fifth and was charged with four runs on six hits and two walks. A group that is missing Max Fried and Carlos Rodón cannot afford for Weathers, who was happy with his stuff and felt he was “singled to death,” to struggle.

“We’ve gone through it a little bit here,” Boone said of a rotation that lacks a fifth starter and has seen a dip from Cam Schlittler.

— Baserunning, where the Yankees ran — or stopped running — into another out.

In the second, Jazz Chisholm Jr. won a nine-pitch battle with Ryan and roped a single into the right field corner. He rounded first hard, slammed on the brakes and said he aggravated a big toe injury that required surgery in 2023.

On the next pitch, he tried to steal second while appearing to be fiddling with his sliding mitt, then abruptly stopped because he said he had no lift in the foot. He was picked off by Minnesota catcher Victor Caratini.

Chisholm, who left the game after five innings, said he would be OK and would not miss time. As for the team, though, he said the “concern level is high.”

“When it’s not going well, it kind of sucks,” said Chisholm, who will be reevaluated Monday. “A lot of guys are kind of tense, but at the same time we just got to remember who we are.”

— Bullpen, with the day’s offenders being unusual (Paul Blackburn) and usual (Camilo Doval).

Blackburn entered a two-on jam in the fifth and could not escape, letting up a two-run single to Royce Lewis.

Pitching for a second straight day, Doval allowed two runs — up to 10 runs in his past three games, though these were unearned because of Volpe’s error — on two hits and a bases-loaded walk.

“We didn’t give the fans much to cheer about this series,” Bellinger said.
